How to Optimize PDF Documents for SEO

On page optimization and link building are the most basic techniques of optimizing a website. Apart from web pages, many sites contain assets in the form of documents (.doc, .pdf), spreadsheets (.xls), presentations and videos (.avi etc). Optimizing these assets is beneficial as they get indexed faster and rank well in the top search engine result pages.

1. Use a Text Based PDF Creator: There are a lot free tools available online with Adobe Acrobat being the best text based PDF creator. If a PDF document is created in an image based program, the search engines will completely ignore it. If the PDF is created using a text based creator like Adobe acrobat, the search engine robots will read and index the text like any other web page.

2. Update the Document Title: The title of the PDF file is as important as the title tag of a web page. The PDF title property tells the search engine robots about the type of content. The most important aspect of the title is that Google uses the text in the title field as the link in the search engine result pages. Thus, the title field should be keyword rich and should not contain random text.

3. Complete the document properties: A PDF file contains many document properties apart from the title field. These are keywords, description, author info, copyright info etc. All the fields must be completed with relevant information. The keyword field should not be stuffed with keywords or remain empty. It has not been proven that the search engines give importance to the keyword field in the document properties. If in future they do, your PDF file will have an advantage over other web pages.

4. Link to the PDF File from the Homepage: The Searchbots will not discover and index the PDF file if it is placed too deep within the website. To ensure that the PDF file gets crawled by the search engines, it should be visibly linked from the home page or any other page which gets crawled regularly. If your aim is to get the PDF in top search engine result pages, then you have to lead the searchbots to it.

5. Optimize the content in the PDF File: The content in the text based PDF files is similar to the content in a website. This makes content optimization an important aspect in optimization of PDF files. The content should be relevant to the subject matter. Important text should be highlighted by increasing their font size and utilizing the bold and italics features of the PDF files. Keywords should be placed in the first few lines of the content.

6. Place Links in the PDF File: When a visitor opens a PDF file ranking in the top search engine results page, there should be a provision in the file to link back to its original website. This action reduces the efforts of the visitor to hunt for the main website. Also, a link from the PDF file can be considered as a backlink by the search engine.

A PDF file is similar to a web page in an assortment of aspects. It should be optimized with as much care as a web page to achieve high rankings.

The Dos and Don’ts of Web Hosting

Okay, so you already know that you want/need a website, but what you aren’t sure of is web hosting! If you need web hosting, go to GoDaddy and not a redistrubitor of GoDaddy, but GoDaddy.com!

I promise you that you and your web designer may be best friends today! But I can guarantee you that somewhere down the road you will part ways. That is when the waters start to get murky! Well whose site is it anyway. Let me make myself very clear here-IT’S YOURS! You paid for it, it’s your site, but some of the designers that have you host with them think that if you are no longer their client they can take your site hostage.

Not only is this site hostage situation unprofessional, it’s illegal! It’s YOUR SITE! And people who redistribute-which means that GoDaddy lets designers like myself resell their hosting packages. Not only do these designers charge you significantly more than if you were to go to GoDaddy directly and purchase the package yourself, but you also have to go through their link to access your site.

So if this designer changes sites or moves on to another business, you now have to search for your hosting and where to log-in. BIG HEADACHE! So go to the web hosting site of YOUR choice and I do prefer GoDaddy.com! Purchase the package yourself, then contact a designer. Stay ahead of the game and save yourself a few headaches!

Web Hosting and Reseller Hosting

Over the past few months more and more people are contacting BLaST creative to share their horror stories of how their site was taken captive by the web designer who hosted their site on their own private server. Or they used a designer in Canada or an oversees company who did the same thing, hosted their site on their private server. NIGHTMARE!!!!

If you are thinking of having a web site design, do some homework, purchase your own hosting. Don't let anyone but you control your web site. You can give your web designer access to your hosting, but you get to keep your files and control over your site.

Another problem is that most hosting company do a resell of their hosting. There are a couple of issues with this, first it costs more, becaue the reseller can adjust the price however they'd like. So in the end they charge you way more then if you would have went to the original hosting company.

Problem #2 with resell hosting, if that person goes out of business or changes business, you don't have access to your site. For example, you can't just go to GoDaddy.com to log-in, you have to find this reseller hosting's site in order to log-in. It's a pain. So save yourself a lot of headaches and go to GoDaddy.com directly to purchase your hosting. No headaches, no heartaches and backup all of your files so that you have them in the event that you need them.

I Got Kicked Off My Web Hosting

So you just got kicked off your web hosting site and now you are looking for a new home. That’s rough. Before you find a new hosting home, you should find out why you were kicked off your original web hosting site.

If you haven’t received an email explaining what you did, then be sure to send one to the site administrator to ask why. You don’t want to make the same mistake twice. In this political war going on before the election, political sites are getting dumped left and right.

If you have a political blog, make sure that you follow all of your web hosting guidelines to the letter. Don’t cross over into grey areas, because if the owner of your hosting company disagrees with your political point of view, he or she can and will kick you off their hosting platform.

Then, you are in a world of hurt, transferring your domain is not always an easy task. If you have hundreds of pages or posts it can take awhile to get all of that data transferred and some of it may not transfer. If you used a template that was supplied from the original hosting service, you may have to have your entire site redesigned. The best thing to do is to follow the rules of your hosting service. If you do happen to get kicked off, find out why and learn from your mistakes.

BLaST Creative Web Hosting

I was asked this week what difference does it make which web hosting service that you use. Well, depending on your site, the design and what you are hoping to accomplish, it really doesn’t matter.

But let’s say that your site is designed using File Maker, which is quickly becoming the #1 application for designing a website, then you will want to use File Maker Web Hosting. It will be easier for the web hosting company to help you resolve any issues should they arise.

If the web hosting service that you use isn’t familiar with your design application then you have a bigger headache trying to fix problems down the road.

Then of course, along with fixing problems is what kind of services do you need and what kind of services does the web hosting service have to offer you? These are all things that will need to be addressed.

But for the most part, the person who is designing your website should be able to lead you to a reputable web hosting service that is competent in working with your particular web site design application.

BLaST Creative Web Hosting and SEO

We’ve already discussed BLaST Creative Web Hosting, so now lets talk about BLaST Creative SEO Services. Let’s talk about an important factor of search engine optimization, submitting your site to Google.

If you are hoping that people will notice your site, then it will be necessary for you to submit your site to Google so that it can be indexed properly.

Google uses what is called a spider to crawl your site so that it can index it properly. But if the spider doesn’t know that your site is there, it can index it. So you need to tell Google about your site.

How to Submit Your Site to Google

• So go to Google’s Home Page and click on “About Google”

• On the next page you will need to click on “Submit your content to Google”
• Another page will pop up and you will need to click on “Add your URL to Google’s Index”

• The last thing that you need to do is to type in the URL of your home page. It normally takes Google about 2 weeks to add your site, but can take up to 2 months.
